Tap Into Gregg Russell

Filed under : gen kids, gendance, Main, music, pop news

When you think of tap, within seconds the name Gregg Russell comes to mind. And the coolest news is that tap dancers are finding hope in the genre’s future thanks to Gregg’s hard work, passion and innovative ways to bring it into the next generation. First off, this mogul is an Emmy nominated choreographer who has worked with all the stars. Ahem, Bette Midler, Gene Kelly, Michael Jackson, Kenny Ortega, The Nicholas Brothers, Gregory Hines-even Smashmouth. Now that’s a rez to aspire to.

Have you seen the latest Volkswagon national commercial? Yep, he’s in it. Superimposed and everything. This winter, we cheered Gregg on when he nailed a victorious tap duet with partner, Ryan Lohoff on Paula Abdul’s Live to Dance. He’s currently training Dancing with the Stars star Derek Hough for an upcoming feature film. Is he tired? Heck no. He keeps on goin’. Gregg basically travels every weekend as a master instructor for Co. Dance as well as working with his tap company Tap Sounds Underground and running his website, www.3ddn.net.

Folks, today we congratulate Gregg-the pioneer. His latest creation, Tap Into the Network, a tap only summer intensive, increased to 6 cities this year. And since they only accept 40 peeps per city, you best get movin’ on to tell your friends about this exclusive event. The auditions are happening now, but hear from Gregg first.

Shuffle Hop Step with Gregg Russell’s Interview NOW >>>

When did you begin tapping?
I started tap dancing when I was 4 years old.
Who is your greatest tap idol? Why?
Henry Le Tang. He was the mentor that took me to the next level in my tapping. He showed me that a shuffle is just as amazing as a trick step, and to enjoy the moment of performing. Wouldn’t be here today without him.
What’s your favorite tap step?
Probably a 3 beat riff (also called a slurp) or a bombershay.
What’s the most common tap step that most people mess up?
Believe it or not it is a buffalo (mix the jog and shuffle together) or maxi ford, especially when they turn.
Favorite music video with tap in it…
not a music video, but when all the hoofers go off in the movie “Tap”
What inspires you as a tapper?
Different “voices”! I love seeing people share their love of tap in their voice, and present it in ways that I haven’t seen before.
What brand of shoe do you wear? Are you loyal to that brand?
I have 3 different pairs that I rotate. Capezio 360 pros; a custom made pair and my hush puppy boots.
Are they custom made?
2 pair are.
How many times do you have to buy new tap shoes as a professional?
Because I rotate, about once every 2 years.
Taps?
Have an amazing shoe repair guy who knows how to put in the screws on taps, so just once a year.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Expanding the boundaries of tap in both the performing and teaching world.
What’s that one professional goal you have yet to reach, but want to reach it before you hang up your shoes?
Would love to perform in a stadium to a packed house. Also, would like to possible get in the Guinness Book of World Records for a tap record.
What does Tap into the network mean to you?
It is an extension of my passion and desire to create the next generation (no pun intended) of tap dancers. Allows me the venue to do this without egos.
What are you specifically looking for in our NEXT GEN audience?
An outlet to build support and recognition for the art form of tap.
What are some “wow me now” secrets that you can give our NEXT GENers as they prepare their submissions? Top 3 things to do:
Be yourself and don’t be fake. 2. Show off your skills but also share your style. 3. Keep it intimate and personal.
Top 3 things NOT to do in their videos.
1. Stray away from competition videos. 2. Don’t stop or show when you make mistakes.  3. No excuses before or after about the quality of video or floor. Just do it and be proud!
How long have you been working together as a three tapper team?
Almost 10 years.
What do you think it is about the three of you that makes you so strong to build this (Tap into the Network) into a huge revolution?
I would say we balance each other out. Ryan is amazing at pushing the boundaries, and kickin’ butt! Angie is wonderful at keeping it real and never giving you an out to give up. My strength lies in seeing the big picture and comprehending what you want to accomplish. With this in mind, that is how we gel as a business unit too.
What would your tagline be as a tapper: GO!
Respect the past, create the future.
What’s your best advice for teachers who are reading this that are considering sending their students to submit?
This is a true intensive that focuses on the fundamentals and versatility of tap, without loosing the passion or respect. It also is an honor to be chosen, as their talent is what earns their place in the intensive, not their financial bracket.
What’s your best advice for a stage mom?
Give your child space to make mistakes.  Create a place where mistakes are ok.  Nurture but don’t smother.
What tap youtube video would you require each and every NEXT GEN submission-er to watch and why?

This video shows the respect of one generation to the next in the most sincere way. It also has two of the all time greats.  Gets me every time.

I would also recommend:

Just for the pure athleticism alone.

Any last words about tap and why it’s important to preserve….
Remember when you see someone better than you, don’t me mad, be inspired.  This mentality will expand and keep tap going for the next century!
